Costa Rica Horseback Riding - Monteverde

Horseback riding is truly one of the best ways to experience Monteverde’s astounding wilderness, as you can cover several miles in a few hours. This allows for more wildlife to be seen, more pictures to be taken, and more vistas to be enjoyed. Monteverde itself is considered a prime location for horseback riding – it is green all year long, has an average daily temperature of 18° C (64° F), and offers endless mountain views. In truth, its very name is reflective of this fact. In Spanish, “monte” means mountain and “verde” means green. Thus, Monteverde means green-mountain.

This tour can be arranged as either a two-hour trip through a private cloud forest reserve or as a cross-country journey to the Arenal Volcano.

It is not permitted to ride through the official reserves of Monteverde and Santa Elena. The daytime horse trips, however, take place within an exclusive 139-hectare (343-acre) farm, whose quiet trails and amazing views make for a memorable and pleasant experience. You’ll have the opportunity to spot toucans, bellbirds and parrots, as well as monkeys, sloths and agouti. You’ll pass mountains and canyons, ride through primary and secondary forest, and even spot the Gulf of Nicoya in the distance.

The horses are well kept and cared for. There is, in fact, a resident veterinarian on hand at the farm. All saddles are equipped with a poncho (just in case it rains), and riding helmets are available upon request.

These 2-hour tours cost $30 and can be arranged at several times. The 6:00 AM tours are the best time for bird watching, while 8:00 AM rides traditionally have the best weather. Furthermore, sunset tours – which depart at 3:30 PM – can be arranged.
