Costa Rica’s Central Valley has much to offer visitors. The modern city of San José is equipped with endless facilities and services, including car rentals, banks, supermarkets, shops, restaurants, bars and more. The countryside surrounding the city hosts two volcanic national parks – the Poás and Irazu – as well as coffee plantations, waterfalls, rivers and zoos.
Vista de Valle means “View of the Valley” in Spanish. True to its name, this hotel is set within the Rio Grande Canyon, an area that – at some 2,700 ft (823 m) above sea level – hosts both tropical moist forests and premontane wet forests. The hotel’s own grounds are extensive and boast inspiring views of this canyon. Private hiking trails wind through forests and meadows, offering guests a chance to search for native birds and butterflies. Horseback tours can be arranged, and guests will surely enjoy visiting the 300 ft (91 m) waterfall that’s found on the property – it’s a wonderful place to take photographs or have a picnic. Indeed, in many ways, Vista de Valle is a destination in and of itself.
The accommodations are just as spectacular as the grounds. Most consist of private bungalows that are exquisitely decorated with hardwood furniture and large windows and surrounded by tropical gardens. With an architectural flare that has been inspired by Japanese design, these bungalows are peaceful and quiet. All have private bathrooms and hot water showers, and most have kitchens or kitchenettes as well as a comfortably equipped balcony. Outdoor showers and private patios adorn several accommodations, and some are even set on the edge of a bluff that looks directly into the canyon.
Vista de Valle’s restaurant is, in a word, gorgeous. Tables and chairs sit against a large line of windows that look out into the forested canyon below. The menu is tasty and varied – the chef picks each week’s items based upon what ingredients are the freshest. Meat, fish, chicken and produce all come from local vendors, and all meals can be adjusted for personal taste or preference. A full breakfast is included in the price of a room.
Guests can unwind next to the large swimming pool or in the warm Jacuzzi. If further relaxation is in order, massages can be arranged as well. What’s more, the hotel offers babysitting service, laundry service and currency exchange.
